THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACTS OF CYBERBULLYING IN ADOLESCENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This literature review aims to provide an in-depth examination of the various psychological effects of cyberbullying on adolescents from a clinical psychology perspective. With the widespread adoption of digital technologies, cyberbullying has emerged as a significant problem threatening the mental health of adolescents. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying, with its characteristics such as anonymity, persistence, and the ability to reach a wide audience, can lead to specific and complex psychological consequences for victims. The current review comprehensively addresses the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems caused by cyberbullying in adolescents. Serious psychological problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, low self-esteem, loneliness, academic failure, substance use, self-harm behaviors, and suicidal ideation are among the common consequences of cyberbullying victimization. Furthermore, individual, familial, and socio-environmental factors that can exacerbate or mitigate the effects of cyberbullying are also examined. The moderator and mediator roles of factors such as personality traits, coping mechanisms, family support, peer relationships, and school climate on the psychological outcomes of cyberbullying are discussed in light of findings from the literature. The data obtained indicate the critical importance of early identification, effective intervention strategies, and protective measures in combating cyberbullying. The necessity of increasing awareness among clinical psychologists, educators, parents, and policymakers regarding the psychological effects of cyberbullying and implementing prevention and intervention programs with a multidisciplinary approach is emphasized. This review aims to guide future research and practices by revealing the profound effects of cyberbullying on adolescent mental health.
