Abstract

The transition from childhood to adulthood, known as adolescence, represents a period wherein biopsychosocial developmental characteristics significantly influence individuals' emotions and behaviors. This investigation delves into the characteristics of this developmental phase and how these traits affect adolescents' emotions and behaviors. The study highlights the challenges faced during adolescence and examines the prominent issues encountered in the emotional adaptation process, emphasizing the tendency towards maladaptive behaviors due to inadequate emotion regulation skills. It also explicates how dysfunctional coping mechanisms can lead to high-risk conditions such as depression and suicide, supported by research findings.

The ability to recognize and differentiate emotions, a critical precursor to emotion regulation, is explored, providing insights into the functions of emotions and aiming to create awareness about the contributions of effectively managed emotions to life quality. The role of emotional intelligence skills in shaping emotion regulation and life satisfaction during adolescence is underscored, discussing the factors influencing the development of these skills. It is highlighted that these skills are dynamic, learnable, and improvable.

Given the individual, situational, and cultural diversity, the study points out that a universal model of emotion regulation may not be effective, thus introducing various models of emotion regulation. The adverse impacts of emotion regulation difficulty on mental and physical health are examined, drawing attention to the significance of emotion regulation skills, the interactions between their sub-dimensions, and their relationships with other variables through a meta-analysis.

This comprehensive examination aims to contribute to the development of emotion regulation programs that will positively influence the holistic well-being of adolescents, thereby facilitating the nurturing of healthy future generations.
